Your sightseeing tour of Arendal isn’t complete without a visit to the Old Town Hall! This magnificent building was originally constructed as a private residence for Arendal’s richest man, Morten Michael Kallevig, between 1812 and 1815. Often referred to as the tallest and second-largest wooden building in Norway, Arendal Old Town Hall consists of four floors.
The third floor was used exclusively for social gatherings, and this is the floor that is open to the public during the summer. It can also be rented by private individuals and associations for all kinds of celebrations and meetings throughout the year. The property was sold to the Municipality of Arendal in 1844 by the widow Kitty Kallevig, whose husband had passed away as early as 1827. Most of the house’s furniture and objects were auctioned off. The building was renovated in 1891, in preparation for King Oscar II’s visit to Arendal, and it served as the city’s town hall until 2004.
The building's portrait collection was started in 1889 and is currently the largest in the country! Here, you’ll find portraits of royalty, civil servants, mayors, members of parliament, and even selected local citizens who have contributed to the city’s development. Be sure not to miss the five chandeliers – the only decorative items remaining from Kallevig’s time in the house.
Open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays in July from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
A guide will also be available on site to offer tours at 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
