Grønningen Lighthouse is a preserved leading light from 1878, strategically positioned on a smooth rock islet at the entrance to Kristiansand. With the sea as its closest neighbor and a unique setting in the Terneholmen and Grønningen nature reserve, the lighthouse provides an authentic experience in Norway’s rugged coastal landscape. There is no electricity or shower, but guests can enjoy simple, rustic comfort in newly renovated interiors.
Staying at Grønningen Lighthouse offers a rare opportunity to live in a historic station surrounded by sea and sky. The lighthouse has 30 beds across 8–9 rooms, with fully equipped kitchens and common areas in the assistant’s residence and boathouse. Guests can use outdoor grills, and furniture, and borrow a rowboat or fishing gear for an authentic archipelago experience.
The lighthouse’s location in a nature reserve means close contact with wildlife, and from April 15 to July 15, access east of the buildings is restricted to protect seabirds. Grønningen Lighthouse remains an important leading light for sailors, safely guiding vessels into Østergapet and Kristiansand. A visit here offers a unique combination of history, nature, and maritime atmosphere.
